In The Closet Gets 4K Upscale

Michael’s “In the Closet” has been newly restored and upscaled to 4K using AI, revealing more detail in one of his most striking and sensual short films. While it isn’t a true 4K remaster and some moments remain slightly soft, it’s still the clearest and most vivid version seen in over 30 years. Released in 1992 as the third single from “Dangerous,” the song was co-written and co-produced with Teddy Riley, blending new jack swing with Michael’s trademark intensity. The Mystery Girl whispering throughout was later revealed as Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, after an earlier plan to duet with Madonna fell through.

Directed by renowned fashion photographer Herb Ritts, the video marked a shift in Michael’s visual style to minimal and intimate. Shot in sepia tones near the Salton Sea in California, it paired Michael with supermodel Naomi Campbell, her performance mirroring the song’s sultry restraint. Michael’s outfit of black pants, white tank, and suede boots, was deliberately simple, letting his dance and presence dominate the frame. Ritts’ distinctive visual style and Michael’s powerful choreography and performance earned the short film an MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography and a nomination for Best Cinematography, reflecting how it stood out at the time for its daring sensuality and restraint. It remains a unique entry in Michael’s videography, less spectacle and more raw connection.

Over three decades later, seeing “In the Closet” in more detail renews appreciation for Michael’s artistry. So much was created by just two figures moving through heat, rhythm, and unspoken tension.
