Michael’s Soccer Jerseys’ Auction

Two soccer jerseys, presented to Michael Jackson by the New Westminster, British Columbia police department, will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on December 16. Interested bidders may participate in the auction online.

The New Westminister, British Columbia police department presented Michael Jackson with the soccer jerseys at a special ceremony, in which he was appointed an honorary member of the department. The presentation coincided with the November 1984 Vancouver leg of Jackson’s ‘Victory’ tour, featuring the six Jackson brothers performing together (although Jackie and Jermaine missed many concerts due to illness). The infamous tour featured a highly controversial ticket lottery, had disappointing total sales and was the last time the brothers toured together. Although the first few concerts were sell-outs, reports of deteriorating relationships between Michael Jackson and his brothers fuelled media speculation and negatively impacted revenues. The tour included eight concerts in Canada.

The New Westminster police department presented Jackson with both a long-sleeved royal blue Alpha brand soccer jersey and a light blue and white short-sleeved Umbro soccer jersey. Both jerseys feature youth soccer programs, appealing to Jackson’s charitable interest in programs to benefit children. The Alpha jersey features the New Westminster police department shield within a white soccer ball with “New Westminster Police/Summer Soccer School.” The Umbro shirt features a smaller version of the New Westminster police department Summer Soccer School league logo.

Bidding for the jerseys begins at $4,000.

Additional information on the jerseys can be found here.
