The Beatles triumphed in the list compiled by the Official Charts Company to mark the 60th birthday of the singles chart; and despite their career being a relatively short one, they still sold more records than acts who have been scoring chart success for a lot longer, including Elvis Presley, who finished second, and Cliff Richard, who was third.
Madonna has finished fourth while Michael completes the top five – and other acts such as Elton John and Abba, have also made the top ten.
