26 Years Of ‘We Are The World’

‘We Are The World,’ was written by Michael and Lionel Ritchie, as a charity song to raise funds for Africa’s starving millions. The song was produced by Quincy Jones and Micharl Omartian.

The first recording session took place on January 22 nd 1985, with a small group of stars, including Richie, Michael and Jones, as well as Stevie Wonder. On the evening of January 28th, a group of stars gathered at a Hollywood studio, to finish the recording.

Almost four dozen celebrities participated in the song, including Dan Aykroyd, Bette Midler, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Ray Charles. The song was released that March and would eventually go on to sell more than twenty million copies.
