Michael’s visit to his birthplace is creating lots of excitement, as the people of Gary prepare to welcome home their native son. They are preparing a host of events to take place on Wednesday, that will reconnect him with his roots.
There is a “great sense of excitement” over Michael’s visit because it’s been two decades since he stepped foot in Gary, Mayor Scott King’s spokeswoman LaLosa Burns said, and the visit is attracting nationwide attention.
Michael will begin his day at Gary City Hall about 10:45 a.m., meeting with Mayor King and the City Council. He’s then expected to visit his boyhood home about noon.
At 2 p.m., he plans to visit his brothers’ alma mater, Roosevelt High School, for a school assembly.
A special event for Gary schoolchildren and the public is being planned for Wednesday at the city’s new baseball stadium. Mayor Burns said the city plans to salute the men and women serving in the Middle East as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, along with honoring and welcoming Michael.
More details will be made available today about that event. The families of the servicemen and women will be invited.
A security force from the city of Gary will accompany Michael and his entourage, Mayor Burns said.
