UNESCO’s Manifesto 2000

One of the organisations who benefited from Michael’s charity concerts ‘What More Can I Give?’ in June 1999 was UNESCO – The United Nations for Education, Science and Culture. UNESCO, was established on 16th of November 1945, and has its headquarters in Paris, France and 60 field offices and units in different parts of the world.

The main objective of UNESCO is to contribute to peace and security in the world by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, culture and communication in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the peoples of the world, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion, by the Charter of the United Nations.

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed the year 2000 as the International Year for the Culture of Peace.

The Manifesto 2000 for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence was written by the Nobel Prize Peace Laureates, in order to create a sense of responsibility starting on a personal level; it is not an appeal or petition addressed to a higher authority.

The goal is to present 100 million signatures to the United Nations General Assembly meeting at the turn of the millennium in September 2000. The Dalaï Lama, Desmond Mpilo TUTU and Nelson MANDELA were among the first signatories of the Manifesto 2000.

The Manifesto 2000 was made public in Paris on March 4th 1999, and is open to signatures for the wider public all throughout the world.
