Unfortunately, Michael had to decline performing at a charity concert to be with his son, Prince, who has fallen ill for the third time this year.
Prince, two, was struck down by a viral fever in New York on Friday night, subsequently losing consciousness and all feeling in his legs and arms, Michael’s spokesman Jonathan Morrish told journalists in Italy.
But Michael’s wife, Deborah Rowe Jackson, said the boy was not dying, as had been reported in Italy after last night’s concert in Modena. “He’s fine. He is not dying … He’s had a virus infection and he’s going to be fine,” she told KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. She was travelling to New York to be with Prince and Michael.
In January Prince had emergency treatment in hospital for a viral infection accompanied by fever and dehydration. Mr Morrish was quoted as saying Prince had suffered three viral infections this year.
Pavarotti’s spokeswoman said Michael’s doctor telephoned Pavarotti’s girlfriend and assistant Nicoletta Mantovani last night and said Prince was ill and Michael could not travel to the War Child concert.
“Pavarotti told the audience that Michael’s son was seriously ill, and sent a greeting hoping that his baby was well very soon.” But she said the doctor told Ms Mantovani this morning that Prince was getting better.
The starry line-up in Modena, including Lionel Richie, Boyzone, BB King, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin, sang a finale of Michael’s song ‘We Are The World’.
This year’s War Child concert is in aid of Kosovar child refugees and Guatemalan children. A million dollars – £670,000 – was donated to Safe Children on the night for the immediate assistance of children from Kosovo.
