Michael’s Portrait Auctioned

New York’s Art Basel show was the venue for the auction of a huge portrait of Michael. Measuring 3.51 metres by 3.1 metres it is the work of New York based artist Kehinde Wiley. Michael commissioned the portrait, which depicts him on a white horse, dressed regally in medieval clothing. It is titled ‘Equestrian Portrait of King Philip II’ and was sold to a German collector for $175,000.

Ms. Wiley said that she had some collaboration with Michael about the portrait, sending him some examples of historical paintings for him to decide how he wanted the paining to look. She added that after he’d died, she felt some responsibility to see the project through, saying; “I think it’s something he would have been proud of.”
