Jackson-Lee Continues Her Fight
Friday, July 10th 2009
Representative Sheila Jackson Lee proposed at Michael’s Memorial that she would offer the House of Representatives a House Resolution 600 in Michael’s honour for his humanitarian service.
The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, said that such a Resolution would be divisive and counter-productive. In her statement this morning, Jackson Lee said she had talked to Michael’s family and she will give them time to mourn and then push for the resolution.
“This resolution is based on fact,” the emailed statement read. “Speaker Pelosi is my dear friend and she recognises the great artist that Michael was. I appreciate her concern that we handle the resolution with the right timing. I do not view her words as disallowing the legislative process to work its will. We will work with this legislation as long as necessary. We welcome positive growing attention to this measure from many of my fellow colleagues.”
The congresswoman also said in her statement that she was pleased that the family accepted “this introduction of the resolution with such joy.”
